Stunning Drone Photographs of the World's Largest Lava Lake

These are images from the largest lave lake in the world inside an active volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We can get really close to the Nyiragongo Volcano and take a look straight into its bubbling red heart in a series of photographs that are truly spectacular.

They were taken using a drone – with one daredevil photographer hiking to the top to capture the images.

2,000 Beluga Whales Captured in Rare and Stunning Arctic Drone Video

For the first time, a wildlife photographer whose family has been frequenting the Arctic for three generations has captured 2,000 beluga whales in stunning video taken with a drone over the course of four weeks.

The footage is captured off Somerset Island is unique in that is said to be the first to film Arctic wildlife with the use of a drone.

The beluga whales, congregating in one of the last beluga whale nurseries on Earth, is definitely magical from a bird’s eye view. Read more

DJI & Ford build a rescue drone that launches from a moving car

DJI announced version 3.0 of its software development kit, or SDK. That's probably not very interesting to you, since most people aren't in the business of building apps to interface with drones. But to help spur developers into working with its SDK, DJI also creates an annual challenge with a cash prize. This year the competition has a very cool and noble theme. DJI is partnering with Ford and the United Nations to offer $100,000 to the team which builds the best application for launching a drone from moving vehicle as part of a theoretical search-and-rescue mission.

‘Bug’ Camera Drone Being Tested by the US Military

The PD-100 Black Hornet 2 is a high-tech camera drone that’s currently being tested by the US military. Unlike consumer drones used by photographers, such as the DJI Phantom or Inspire, the PD-100 is designed to be extremely stealthy: it fits in the palm of your hand, and weighs just 18 grams — about the same as 3 to 4 sheets of ordinary printer paper. Oh, and they cost $40,000 each.
